Unit 4 Blog Entry

I am beginning to think this class is not for me as I found the exercise to be difficult. This was yet another exercise that made me want to go to sleep before it was over. Anytime I hear sounds such as the ocean as in this video, I get really relaxed and sleepy. I even feel a little sleepy when I go on vacation and get near the ocean and hear the waves in person. I got a pretty bad suntan one time because the ocean waves made me fall asleep while lying out in the sun.

Concentrating on a loved one was not hard, but I found it difficult to take in their suffering, as I just don’t know how to do it, other than following the breathing instructions given. I can think these thoughts, but I’m not sure if they are actually helping.

The flute music that was added, and even though it was faint, it made me even sleepier. I had a hard time getting through it without drifting to sleep. With that said, the exercise is not for me, because I clearly do not have trouble relaxing, but I do know of a few people who have trouble in that department, and I just may recommend this to them. This exercise seemed a bit too “hippy-ish” (if that’s a word) for me.

From what I understand about the mental workout is that we have to perform exercises with our mind to make is stronger and healthier, and that a strong and healthy mind leads to happiness and better physical health. Research has shown that like other exercise, we have to start out slowly until our minds get used to it, and as time goes by, we can increase the intensity. And just like any other exercise, if we stop for a period of time, the mind will begin to weaken again. Implementing the mental workouts may be hard for me, since all the exercises this far has made me want to sleep. I guess I will have to do some research and find other relaxation exercises to incorporate into my life.

Until next time.....

  1. I agree with you I had no luck with this exercise, it didn't make me sleepy however, none of the exercises have, but I couldn't connect to this one. I'm not sure if the change in the voice had something to do with it, the man who did the previous ones, his voice tickled me inside and make me want to listen, whereas the woman's voice had no effect on me at all. You are lucky you can relax so easily, the only time I fall asleep easily is whenever I'm in a car, even if I'm driving, I have to be careful because I'll fall right to sleep! I think my biological mother must have driven me around in the car when I was an infant to get me to go to sleep because a car ride is like taking a sleeping pill for me! Don't give up on this class yet, we are just figuring out what works and what doesn't. I too hope the next exercise will have a better outcome than this one did.

  2. Hello, I agree with you on some. I was starting to get tired but I just refocused my mind and I woke up. But I had to refocus a couple of times during the exercise. I have done exercises like this before and I find them very beneficial. I think that they take time and like you said may need a different voice and noises that work for you. I had to work hard to keep my mind on the task at hand but it will get easier if you keep at it. At least is has for me and in the past has.
Hope you find some benefit next time.

  3. Hi Donna,

Don't be discouraged. I do not think that the class isn't for you because you didn't connect with the exercise. Heck, I love this class, I'm enjoying all of my classmates (including you), have connected with all of the previous exercises and still did not connect with this one. Of the several blogs that I have read, it appears that most people found this exercise difficult, myself included. I am one who connects rather easily with relaxation techniques and exercises because of the fact that I enjoy them; however, that was not the case for this exercise. I just wanted to share that with you in hopes that you may take a second look at your perspective in regards to whether or not the class is for you. As it relates to this exercise, you are most certainly not alone in your difficulty with it. Stay encouraged as just like all foods do not suit our taste, nothing in life is an exception to that rule. I think you will finish this course on top and this exercise will be a thing of the past that you just know didn't suit your taste:-)

  4. Donna,

I had a hard time with this one as well and I usually do very well with these types of exercises. I love that you used the word hippy-ish. I actually use that word often! Lol! I have a hard time visualizing taking in someone's suffering. I'm not against wanting to take someone's pain away, but I do not believe that is my place to do so. So, for me, the exercise kind of lost me at that point because I will never do that. And you are right, you just visualize and imagine it. When you have an intention, even a thought out one, that is how the energy works. It's all about intention and stuff. :)

As for your explanation of a mental workout, I think you hit the nail on the head. I think you explained it perfectly. I was talking to a friend today and explained this very thing today. If we can practice thinking in a positive way, then our lives will start to reflect that thinking. And when we are practicing positive thinking during very negative times, that is like upping the weights. It is harder to do and will help us strengthen our mental capacity! I try to do this daily. As you know, I have been struggling a little bit with post partum depression and this type of thinking has helped me tremendously. I credit this class for a lot of it as it is a good daily reminder for me. :)

  5. Hello Jo,

I found the fake ocean sound distracting, and I had a hard time really not concentrating on the 20 second loop that kept playing over and over again. I agree with you, I think that intention has a lot to do with energy. If you have bad intention you will send and receive bad energy, and vice versa with good energy. Good blog!
